Bryany's Story
|
Bryany had a cancerous tumour on her brain, which left her with very little sight, and what sight she did have was made up of small tunnels. Her Mum and Dad along with her sister helped Bryany to do the wish list. It consisted of a combined TV/video or a tricycle. The family had to sit to one side of the room because if Bryany wanted to watch the TV she would have to sit right in front of it. The tricycle was the other wish because she used one at her special school and it gave her the stability, which she could not get from an ordinary bike even with stabilisers.
Ursula had been talking to David from the Polegate Fish shop, Seabreeze; he said that he would like to take Bryany’s tricycle on as a fund raising project. He would raise the money we needed for it by holding raffles and various other events in his shop. Behind every good man there is a woman, David has two, Jenny his wife and Lisa his right hand person in the shop. With the families and the shop customers they set about raising £750, which we had been told was the price of the tricycle. Jenny and two of their daughters did a sponsored cycle ride. The shop had various raffles and fun evenings and David even acquired some Dinosaur bones which he put on display and had a donations box by the side of them.
Whilst this was going on we also
did some fund raising and got enough money together for the TV/video that
had also been mentioned on her wish list. We presented this to the family
and received a lovely letter from them saying how much it had changed the
family's life.

Bryany's TV had been set up in the same room where she could be comfortable and see the screen. At the same time the family could sit relaxed in the room watching the same program on the household TV, without all having to look at one corner of the screen.
Then David hit his target, in fact
they ended up raising £785, he presented us with a cheque and we
got her bike on order. Bryany had used a similar bike at her school and
it had been found that even with Bryany's very limited vision she could
concentrate on steering without having to worry about balancing.

We bought the tricycle and invited
Bryany and her family down to David's shop to receive it with her family.
After a short time she felt comfortable on the bike and was soon chasing
people around the car park! All she has to do now is learn how to use the
brakes. Since taking it home her Dad has built a special shed for the bike,
she has learnt to use the brakes and is classed as the coolest kid on the
block.

It has only once again been possible to change these peoples lives with the support from everyone involved, so on behalf of the family may we at C.W.C.F thank David, his family, his staff, as well as everyone who helped raise the money enabling us to reach another target.
Below you can see Bryany admiring
the bike in a special shed her Dad made for her.
