Sahar's Story

Sahar is a five year old little girl with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia who lives with her mum Niki and thirteen year old sister Sofia. Niki wanted a wish for Sofia as she had been so courageous during the first year of Sahar’s illness. When we asked Sofia she told us what she wanted was a new fold-up bike, as her old one had been stolen, so that’s exactly what we got her.

Below is a piece that Sofia wrote about when Sahar was diagnosed with the cancer.

Sahar getting cancer

I felt so scared fear ran down my spine. She sat there like a statue in the ice cold car. Sahar’s beautiful green, brown and blue eyes stared ahead expressionlessly. Her lips were the shade of dark purple. Her small fragile body was shaking at a steady pace. My mum drove quickly to the emergency department of the hospital. We arrived at the big white building. I felt so tiny compared to the hospital. My heart sank. My dad held Sahar in his terrified hands. I trailed on into the emergency department behind my family. I sat down on one of the many chairs that were there. We waited for what seemed like hours. I saw an injured man come out of the ward with his trousers covered with blood, his head was covered in a blinding white bandage and he did not seem to be an appealing sight. I felt sick knowing that people were dying at this very moment in this building. It made me feel very upset and insecure. Finally a nurse told us to follow her to through to the ward. She directed us to a cubicle which consisted only of an uncomfortable bed, an extremely bright lamp on top of a bedside table and a box of tissues. Sahar, my younger sister, lay down on the bed crying. I stood beside her cuddling her and telling her it was going to be alright. She ignored me and her tears were flowing out of her delicate eyes like a tap. My heart ached as my sister lay there in so much pain and there was nothing I could do to make it better. I kissed her forehead gently. Her smooth soft skin touched my lips…

The next day my family were told what was wrong with Sahar. She had leukaemia which is a cancer of the blood. From then on our lives have been turned upside down. This whole experience has been a rollercoaster ride for me and my family. Looking back from now everything seemed so strange and confusing. I now know a lot more about Sahar’s cancer and I understand whats happening with all her medicine. I think this whole experience has been good for me as I have learnt how to deal with emotional times and how to react to them. Sahar goes to school now and she seems like the Sahar who didn’t have cancer. I hope the rest of her treatment goes well!

I was so happy when I heard that I could have my wish come true. I decided to get a bike because my old one got stolen and I missed cycling around. Since I have had my new fold up bike, I have cycled to the sea front and around town! I am so happy and I thank Children with Cancer Charity for making my wish come true
